Latin name: Melaleuca quinquenervia or viridiflora
Source country: Madagascar
Appearance: Clear to very pale yellow thin liquid.
Aroma: Harsh, camphoraceous, medicinal, earthy.
Derivation: Steam distilation of the leaves and twigs from the tree which is an
evergreen.
Chemicals: Contains very similar chemotypes to eucalyptus and tea tree and therefore
has the same antiseptic properties. The main chemicals are alpha phellandrene, alpha
pinene, beta pinene, cineole (50-60%), gamma terpineol, limonene, linalool and
piperitone.
Uses: Used mostly for its strongly antiseptic properties. It is stronger than either
eucalyptus or tea tree. It is a Cicatrisant - it diminishes scars left on the skin by problems
like acne and pimples. Ia well as antiseptic, it is analgesic and antirheumatic - helping with
the pain in those muscles and joints. It works by bringing increased blood flow to the
affected areas. It is relatively non toxic and safe to use and can be used as a decongestant.
It is said to be an effective insecticide for mosquitoes and flying insects.
Note: As with all pure essential oils, dilute appropriately with a suitable carrier oil
before using on the skin. Do not take essential oils internally.
